The Bourne Commentary: The Modern Pundit’s Guide to Surviving a Petrol Station Ambush

We live in a world where things have gone entirely, spectacularly off the rails. Once upon a time, if you didn’t like a football manager’s tactical decisions, you went to the local pub, drank an ungodly amount of mediocre bitter, and screamed at a television until your vocal cords resembled shredded wheat. That was the social contract. You pay your hard-earned money, and you earn the absolute right to call a professional athlete completely useless.

But now? Now, if you point out that a club’s administration has the organizational competence of a drunk jellyfish, you don’t just get angry comments on the internet. No, apparently, you get a swift visit from two knuckle-dragging troglodytes on a moped who want to restructure your face at a petrol station.

Look at what happened to Joe Zakaria. The man runs a YouTube channel. He talks about football. He was doing nothing more inherently dangerous than putting air into his tyres when two brainless grunts decided that the appropriate response to sports critique was a fractured eye socket. It is sickening, it is intensely cowardly, and it means the modern football pundit now requires the security detail of a minor Balkan dictator just to buy a chocolate bar.

The police are, as usual, looking into it, which generally means they are reviewing CCTV that looks like it was filmed through a jar of mayonnaise. So, until the authorities locate their collective spine, the burden of survival falls squarely on you, the independent creator. If you insist on telling the truth in a world increasingly governed by thugs, you must stop behaving like a peaceful YouTuber and start behaving like a professional escape driver. Here is your manual for not getting murdered for your opinions.

The first lesson is mastering situational awareness, or what tactical intellectuals call the OODA Loop, which stands for Observe, Orient, Decide, Act. It sounds like something from a bad Tom Cruise movie, but it works. The greatest weapon an attacker has is not a knife, or a pipe, or a heavily modified Yamaha motorcycle. It is your utter, blinding stupidity. Human beings walk around like electronic zombies, faces glued to screens, completely oblivious to the fact that a six-foot-four barbarian is walking towards them with a blunt object.

When you are out in public, you must treat your surroundings like a race track. You scan the mirrors constantly. If you see two men sitting on a stationary motorbike near a petrol pump, and they aren’t buying fuel, they aren’t waiting for their mothers. They are targeting you. Look directly at them. Let them know you have seen them. The moment a thug realizes he has lost the element of surprise, his tiny, pea-sized brain panics because thugs are, by definition, cowards who only fight when the odds are entirely in their favor.

Next, you must achieve the triumph of randomized chaos. The easiest person to ambush is a predictable one. If you leave your house at precisely eight in the morning, drive the exact same route to the exact same studio, and buy the exact same oat-milk latte from the exact same hipster barista, you might as well send your daily itinerary to the people who hate you via registered mail. You must become utterly chaotic. Drive a different way. Go to the gym at midnight. Buy a different car if you can afford it, or at least wash the bloody thing so it doesn’t stand out in a car park.

Never pay the distraction tax. If you must fill your car with petrol, do not stand there checking your Twitter metrics with your back to the world. Stand with your spine against the vehicle, eyes scanning the perimeter. You are a human being, not a grazing gazelle waiting for a cheetah to pop out of the bushes. And buy a high-quality dashcam. Not a cheap one that unglues itself when the sun comes out, but a proper, hardwired system that records twenty-four hours a day. Thugs absolutely hate being on television because it ruins their long-term career prospects.

Let us assume the worst has happened despite your best efforts. You didn’t see them coming, or you were cornered in a space with no clear exit. What do you do? First, you do not try to be Bruce Lee. You are a person who talks about football for a living, you are not a trained assassin, and you will get hurt if you try to trade punches. Your only objective is to create space and make an absolute nuisance of yourself.

Put a vehicle, a bin, or a concrete pillar between you and them, and run toward a crowded shop. If you are trapped near your vehicle, lean on the car horn and do not let go. Make enough noise to wake the dead. If you are knocked to the ground, you must adopt the shield position. Protect your head with your forearms, tuck your chin tightly, and bring your knees up to your chest. Your brain is what pays the mortgage, so protect it at all costs.

Crucially, you must shout the right words to control the narrative. When Joe was attacked, the grunts yelled that he was a thief to stop bystanders from intervening. You must counter-attack with the loud truth. Do not scream inarticulate noises. Scream that you are being targeted and tell the crowd to call the police. It breaks the bystander effect and forces the public to realize they are witnessing a violent crime rather than a civil dispute over a stolen wallet.

It is an absolute tragedy of the highest order that a man cannot share his thoughts on a football match without needing the evasive driving skills of a getaway driver and the situational awareness of an MI6 operative. It is completely pathetic. But if we stop talking, if we let the faceless goons win, then the beautiful game belongs to them. So, buy the dashcams, watch your mirrors, keep your chin down, and whatever you do, do not shut up.
