Sportswashing the Bloodshed: Why #BoycottUSA2026 is a Moral and Security Necessity

If you ever needed proof that we are living in a simulation scripted by a particularly nihilistic teenager with a penchant for dark irony, look no further than the state of international football. As we barrel toward the 2026 World Cup, the “Beautiful Game” has become a bloated, ethics-free carcass, and Gianni Infantino is currently performing a celebratory jig on its remains.

To say that FIFA has lost its moral compass would imply it ever had one to begin with. But with #BoycottUSA2026 now a full-blown roar rather than a whisper, the sheer, unadulterated hypocrisy of the Zurich bigwigs has reached a level of absurdity that would make a Machiavellian courtier blush.

Let’s talk about the “Russia Precedent.” In 2022, FIFA found its spine with remarkable speed, booting Russia out of the World Cup qualifiers before the ink on the invasion orders was even dry. The “neutrality” mask was dropped because, apparently, invading a neighbour is where FIFA draws the line.

Fast forward to 2026. The United States—our esteemed primary host—is currently engaged in “Operation Epic Fury,” raining strikes on Iran with the casual air of a man swatting a fly. The devastation is not a “surgical” abstraction; it is a bloodbath. In the first week alone, the U.S. and its partners have struck over 3,000 targets, leaving the Iranian Red Crescent to count a staggering 1,825 dead, the vast majority of whom are civilians. We’ve seen the “unintentional” flattening of a girls’ school near Bandar Abbas that claimed 170 lives in a single afternoon. If “invading a neighbour” or pulverising sovereign territory is the metric for expulsion, then the U.S. hasn’t just crossed the line—it has carpet-bombed it into non-existence. Yet, from FIFA’s headquarters, the silence is so deafening you could hear a bribe drop in a Swiss vault.

We have a White House openly flirting with the annexation of Greenland and treating Canada like a wayward 51st state. Yet, the silence from FIFA’s headquarters is so deafening you could hear a bribe drop in a Swiss vault. If territorial sovereignty is the metric, then the US isn’t just flirting with the line; it’s treated it like a finishing tape in a 100-meter dash.

Then came December 2025—the moment satire officially died. Gianni Infantino, a man who navigates the world’s dictators with the grace of a seasoned waiter, presented the inaugural “FIFA Peace Prize” to the U.S. President.

This is sportswashing in its purest, most toxic form. While the administration was busy authorising lethal strikes and presiding over the deadliest year in ICE history, FIFA was busy sculpting a trophy. Awarding a Peace Prize to a leader currently engaged in active combat is like giving a fire safety award to an arsonist while the curtains are still smouldering.

The #BoycottUSA2026 coalition’s concerns about this being the “deadliest year in ICE history” aren’t just statistics—32 died in custody like discarded inventory; they are a warning label. A country that cannot—or rather, will not—ensure that a football ticket isn’t a one-way pass to a detention centre is not a host. It’s a jailer with a marketing budget.

Imagine, if you will, a fan from Dakar or Tehran—having already survived the Herculean task of securing a visa—trying to enjoy a quarter-final while ICE tactical units hover near the turnstiles like vultures at a buffet.

This isn’t “stadium security”; it’s a hostile environment by design. By refusing to wall off the tournament from domestic deportation squads, the U.S. has signalled that the World Cup isn’t a festival of sport, but a giant dragnet. It’s the ultimate “sovereignty gambit”—welcoming the world’s money while keeping the handcuffs polished and ready at the gate.

For the fans, the “World Cup” has become a “bureaucratic theatre” of the absurd. The #BoycottUSA2026 coalition isn’t just being dramatic; they’re being realistic. We are expected to believe the US is a “safe and civilised” host while visa bans are slapped on fans from Senegal and Iran like they’re unwanted guests at a suburban gala.

Why should a Belgian family or a Scottish supporter fly into a country where “unjust detentions” are the new national pastime? To participate in this tournament is to endorse a host that views international law as a polite suggestion rather than a requirement.

Iran has already done the unthinkable: they’ve walked away. They’ve looked at the “bromance” between Infantino and the White House and decided that “soccer” isn’t worth the price of their dignity. The moral bankruptcy of this tournament cannot be solved with a catchy anthem or a redesigned mascot. The only solution is a total extraction. Move the matches to Canada and Mexico—countries that, for the moment, haven’t expressed a desire to annex their neighbours anytime soon.
